TZG SECURES GOVERNOR’S PROCLAMATION DECLARING AUGUST 2023 CHILDREN’S VISION & LEARNING MONTH
Serving as Government Affairs Counsel to the New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians (NJSOP), The Zita Group was pleased to help our client secure a Governor’s Proclamation designating August 2023 Children’s Vision and Learning Month in New Jersey. NJSOP is dedicated to advancing the profession of optometry and serving optometrists in meeting the eye care needs of the public. The NJSOP is focused on improving the quality and availability of vision care and they fulfill this objective by providing reliable and current information regarding eye care and health care policies. One of their most important responsibilities is to educate the public to enhance and ensure competent, quality patient care along with promoting the importance of routine comprehensive eye exams.
Early-onset severe vision impairment in young children can lead to delayed development in various areas, with long-term consequences. School-age children with vision impairment may experience lower educational achievement and self-esteem compared to their normally-sighted peers.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 6.8% of children under 18 years in the United States have a diagnosed eye and vision condition. Additionally, nearly 3 percent of children under 18 years are considered blind or visually impaired, even when wearing glasses or contact lenses, indicating significant challenges faced by a considerable number of children in the country.
In recognition of this critical link between eye health and learning, this important proclamation recognizes the significance of proper eye care for children and underscores the critical link between eye health and learning. The proclamation also encourages parents and educators to address learning-related vision problems, helping ward off potential learning disabilities derived from visual impairment and, ultimately, enabling children to achieve their full potential.
